Author & audience: Matthew (also called Levi), a former tax collector and one of the twelve apostles, writing primarily to a Jewish-Christian audience.
Historical/cultural background: Matthew writes to show that Jesus is the promised Messiah and King of Israel, the fulfillment of the Old Testament law and prophets. He quotes the Old Testament more than any other gospel writer to make this case to a Jewish audience wrestling with how Jesus relates to their scriptures and expectations, and he closes with the Great Commission, extending the good news to all nations.
